Choosing The Right Chemical Peel For You

A chemical peel is a minimally invasive procedure that rejuvenates the facial skin. Many of the problems with skin texture and tone can be improved by removing the upper layer. This stimulates replacement tissue growth. There are several different peel treatments that target specific problems. Choosing the proper chemical peel is not difficult. The decision is based on the actual texture of the skin and the depth of any discolorations as well as the severity of any wrinkling the client wishes to eliminate.

During a consultation, we suggest one of the peel procedures and explain why it would be the preferred solution. Below, we summarize the difference between the various peel procedures and explain what problems they can correct.

Light Chemical Peel

This is sometimes referred to as a lunchtime peel because it can be performed in about 45 minutes. A light peel removes only the epidermal layer. It is performed as a means to reduce the severity of small wrinkles and crow’s feet, and it also improves the skin tone to some degree.

An example of one of our light peels would be our Illuminize Peel, which is good for general maintenance or freshening up.

Medium Peel

This is a slightly more aggressive treatment that targets hyperpigmentation in the upper layers of the skin. It can improve the appearance of superficial blemishes such as injury scars, acne scars, and light stretch marks. The acid is allowed to set on the skin for a longer period of time, and it affects the epidermis as well as the upper layer of the dermis.

A medium peel we offer is our Vitalize Peel, which can help with acne scarring.

Deep Peel

A deep chemical peel can improve the appearance of thicker wrinkles, sun-damaged skin, and discolorations that lie within the lower dermal layers. A strong acid is used to burn away the epidermis and some of the dermal tissue that lies beneath.

Our VI Peel is our deepest peel, and we have two different options for different focuses, either for severe acne scarring or frustrating signs of aging.

Advantages Over Other Treatments

Chemical peel treatments are a great example of how the body can take care of itself given a chance to do so. The slight injury to the skin caused by peel treatments kickstarts a recovery process whereby the body produces newer, healthier skin tissue. The results are far more dramatic than dermabrasion or light therapy. Because the skin tissue creation involves collagen production, the skin becomes more supple and taut, an added bonus.

The results can be long-lasting, especially if a medium or deep peel is performed. However, many of our clients are happy with the results of a superficial peel and have the procedure repeated every six months or so as part of their skin care regimen.
